What is Sober Transportation?
Sober transport is a specialized form of transportation service for individuals dealing with substance use disorder or recovery. Unlike regular transport (i.e. taxis, ride shares, public transit), sober transport includes emotional, logistical, and safety support.
Sober transport grew out of recognition that many people relapse during transitions—when leaving detox/recovery, being discharged from hospital, or traveling without support. Research shows that vulnerable periods often involve travel, and that support during those journeys can make the difference between relapse and continued progress.
When to use Sober Transportation
Entering Treatment
Home → detox or inpatient facility; may require travel out of town, coordination with facility intake.
Leaving Treatment
Coming out of a treatment facility; going home or to a sober living environment; needing emotional & logistical support as community settings can be triggering.
Between Treatment Settings
Transfer from detox to residential rehab, from rehab to outpatient, or from rehab to sober living.
Relapse Prevention
When clients are returning temporarily to their home environment or familiar settings, especially after travel or time away.
Family or Social Events, Work, or Travel
Sometimes clients need transport for life events (weddings, work obligations, personal travel) in early recovery. These are often high-risk due to exposure to triggering environments.
